WE RAISE OUR THUMBS UP to Philippine Daily Inquirer in their article titled, "Julio Diaz lands on drug list, insists he's clean," dated on July 29, 2016.
The story involves Julio Diaz who was an alleged drug user. A village in Meycauayan City, Bulacan included him in their drug watch list and sent him a letter to surrender. Their action obliged the local police station to ask Diaz to report to their office.
Philippine Daily Inquirer accorded to the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Code of Ethics.
The publication sought the truth and reported it. Julio Diaz retorted that he had been confined in a hospital since April. Inquirer probably knew, researched, or asked Diaz himself about the piece of information. PDI cited that Diaz is being treated for brain aneurysm and hypertension. Meycauayan police Chief Supt. Lailene Amparo believed that the case may be caused by outdated information. She was quoted, "People on that list need to prove they are not users or dealers. They would need to be monitored to prove they have not used illegal drugs. This must be done for the benefit of the public. In the case of Diaz, however, we will give him a chance to prove otherwise. He has a right to clear his name."
We recommend that Inquirer should raise queries to the village who implicated Julio Diaz in the drug trade, asking for their basis of adding him on their drug watch list and whether they confirmed the information or not.
