Media Monitor: Rappler's photograph on Davao bombing

(Old)

In a news article written by Rappler on September 3 titled “US, Australia condole with victims of Davao explosion,” the United States and Australia expressed their sympathy to the victims of the Davao City explosion.

Online News Agency Rappler

The problem comes when Rappler attached a photo of the gruesome and bloody scene of the incident

Section 19 of the SPJ Code of Ethics clearly states “Balance the public’s need for information against potential harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance or undue intrusiveness.

Rappler, even as an online news agency, must still uphold the standards used by publications on censoring violent and bloody scenes in photographs.

They must grayscale or blur the photo if necessary, such as in events where blood and gore is involved.
