Online news agency Rappler wrote an article on September 8, titled "Philippines accepts ASEAN chairmanship for 2017." President Duterte is the new chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2017.

The problem comes when Rappler, in an unusual non-updated article, did not elaborate the news story. The article is drowned by redundant quotes, and it failed to answer the questions Why and How.
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Code of Ethics states that:
Seek Truth and Report It
- Gather, update, and correct information throughout the life of a news story.
Minimize Harm
- Consider the long-term implications of the extended reach and permanence of publication. Provide updated and more complete information as appropriate.
Rappler has the privilege to edit and update their news stories every minute and every hour due to the nature of their company. It is an online news agency, working under the leisure of the internet's reach and capability to deliver information instantaneously.
In that premise, Rappler failed to research more about the ASEAN chairmanship thus resulting to misinformation in social media, as it had affected netizens, a term used for the social media community, who thought that the president was admired by ASEAN nations and therefore congratulated him with his assumed success and fame.
According to section 1, article 31 "Chairman of ASEAN," Chapter X "Administration and Procedure," The Chairmanship of ASEAN shall rotate annually, based on the alphabetical order of the English names of Member States.
It was in the year 2006 when Philippines last chaired the ASEAN, during the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo administration.
We believe that Rappler should be consistent in doing and teaching their common practice as an organization.
